B. Limitation of the Study
Based on the title of the thesis; “Students’ Difficulties in Understanding Recount text: A Case of the Eight Year Students of
Tulis Batang in the Academic Year 2008/2009”, it has been clear that the thesis is limited to:
1. Revealing the student’s mastery and difficulties
2. The kind of genre to be researched is limited to the written recount text only.
3. The subjects of the research are just the eight year students
4. The school being researched is
SMP 1 Tulis Batang
5. The academic year of the research is 2008/2009.
C. Statements of the problem
According to the background of the study, the writer can state the problems below:
1. To what extent are the students able to understand recount texts?
2. What are the difficulties generally faced by the students in understanding Recount texts?
3. What is the possible solutions for the difficulties?
D. Objectives of the Study
Based on the statements of the problem above, the writer can determine the objectives as follow:
1. To find out the students’ability in understanding Recount texts
2. To know the students’ difficulties in understanding Recount texts
3. To suggest possible solution of the difficulties in understanding Recount texts
E. Sigificances of the Study
The result of the study is expected to be useful for:
1. The Researcher/Writer
By conducting the research, the researcher will reveal the student’s difficulties in understanding recount text. He then can suggest certain solution of the difficulties being faced and he will of course get valuable experience of the research conducted.
2. The Teacher
The teacher, especially the English teacher will get information and description about how far the students understand what they have taught. The result of the study can be used for consideration in the teaching learning activities.
3. The Students
After the students are researched, they will know their lack in understanding recount text and they are hoped to have better comprehension of it.
4. The Reader
Through this research/study, the reader can learn and reflect of it. It also can be used as the reference for the next research.
F. Definition of the Key Terms
To make clear to the reader, the writer would like to clarify the terms used in this study as follow:
In Oxford Dictionary the word, “difficulty” is explained as the trouble or effort that something involves. It means that difficulty is the hard condition that needs effort to cope with.
In Oxford-Advance learner’s dictionary, ‘understanding’ means the power of clear thought, intelligence that is used to know the meaning of words, a language and a person’s character.
3. Recount text
Recount text is one kind of genre texts. This text-type has the social function; to retell events in the past in a sequence way. This text consists of; orientation, list of events and reorientation.
G. Outline of the Thesis
To help the reader understand the Thesis, the writer describes the Thesis into five chapters.
Chapter I present the introduction. It consists of : Background of the study, Limitation of the study, Statements of the problem, Objectives of the study, Significances of the study, Definition of the key terms and Outline of the thesis.
Chapter II presents Review of the Literature. It consists of: Research variable, and Review of theory relevant to variable which covers: Genre, Kinds of genre, Recount text and English teaching at
III presents method of the research. It consists of: Type of the
Research, Setting of the research, Subject of the research, Design of the
research, Procedures of the research, Instrument of the research and Techniques
of data analysis.
Chapter IV presents Research findings and Discussion. It discusses about description and presentation of the data collected, test of validity, reliability and item difficulty and discussion.
Chapter V presents conclusions and suggestions.
